3 Symptoms Of ADD
If you have a child with ADD you are probably wondering what you can do to make sure that they get the help that they need to be successful. In order to get your child the proper treatment, you need to make sure that you are correctly diagnosing the problem. Many people only see ADD as a hyperactive child, but this is one factor, and in some cases, the child may not be that hyperactive. Here are some other things your child might have.
1. Problems With Impulse Control
Children with ADD commonly show issues with impulse control. In fact, this is one of the most common symptoms. You might notice that your child seems to understand the rules when you talk to them about it before hand, but when they get to say the grocery store, they still have a hard time not grabbing things. It might present itself as a compulsive need to touch everything, press buttons when they see buttons, eat something as soon as it is in front of them, and so forth.
Children with ADD might be unable to control their feelings and actions, and because of that they are constantly getting in trouble at school, home or even with friends.
2. Easily Distracted
Another common sign of ADD is getting distracted often. This may be in simple situations, such as talking with friends, or it could be in important situations such as school, work (if the child is old enough to have a job) and so forth. The child may seem as though they want to pay attention, but drifts off shortly after the task begins.
Distraction can also present itself with being unable to complete tasks. For instance, you might tell the child "go put on your shoes, get your coat and meet me in the car." The child then gets as far as putting on their shoes, and the finds something in their room and begins to play a game. This is a common sign of ADD.
3. Fidgeting
You might notice that your child is fidgeting a lot. It is like they have bottled up energy that they simply cannot release. This fidgeting makes it hard for them to hold still, be in the same place for very long, or to enjoy relaxing tasks.
In order to have ADD your child doesn't have to all of these symptoms, but it is common for them to have at least a couple of these problems. Contact a clinic, like Anxiety Depression Disorders Clinic, for more help.
