Choosing To Live A Healthier Life

I have always been someone who really loves to get out there and enjoy time with other people, which is why I started becoming more and more involved in outdoor activities. Unfortunately, a few months ago I was left with a debilitating injury that I knew I had to resolve, and so I met with my medical care provider. He told me that I had been living with a stress fracture, and I knew that I had to have surgery to get it fixed. During my recovery, I decided to create a blog all about health and medical topics to help other people just like me. Check it out.

Stem Cell Treatment For Arthritis In The Knees

Pain in the knees can be debilitating, so when you start to experience arthritis in the knees as an older adult, you can face problems with everything from walking and running to simply getting out of bed in the morning. For a lot of years, there weren't a whole lot knee arthritis sufferers could do to get rid of the pain associated with the problem, but thankfully, stem cell research has brought in some new forms of treatment. Even though stem cell treatment is still in its earliest stages, it is one of the more common treatments for people who have arthritic joints, specifically the knees.

How does stem cell treatment for knee arthritis work?

Your body continuously regenerates stem cells that help support a healthy overall function and the rejuvenation of other cells. However, as you get older, stem cell regeneration slows in the body, which can contribute to problems with arthritis and joint pain. The reason stem cell therapy works for arthritic pain in the knees is the targeted area  is given a high dose of stem cells that is higher than what your body can normally create on its own. These stem cells go to work immediately by invigorating those tired, inflamed cells that are causing the problem, so you will feel some relief.

Where do the stem cells for treatment come from?

The stem cells used for the treatment of arthritis in the knees and other joints will come from your own body. On the day you are scheduled for treatment, a lab technician will take blood from you, and depending on the planned procedure, stem cells will be harvested from either blood vessels, bone marrow, or other tissues. The stem cells are put through a rejuvenation process to help them multiply in numbers, and then these cells are used for your therapy. Other forms of stem cell therapy not in the US may involve stem cells from an outside donor.

How long will the treatment help with the arthritic pain?

All patients will have their own experiences with stem cell treatment, but most do see some long-term relief. Depending on the specific type of stem cell treatment you receive and how well your body responds to the treatment, you could see lasting results that you carry with you for a lot of years. However, some patients do need to receive ongoing stem cell injections to retain continuous results.
