Choosing To Live A Healthier Life

I have always been someone who really loves to get out there and enjoy time with other people, which is why I started becoming more and more involved in outdoor activities. Unfortunately, a few months ago I was left with a debilitating injury that I knew I had to resolve, and so I met with my medical care provider. He told me that I had been living with a stress fracture, and I knew that I had to have surgery to get it fixed. During my recovery, I decided to create a blog all about health and medical topics to help other people just like me. Check it out.

What To Anticipate When You Undergo Substance Abuse Treatment

After battling a drug or alcohol addiction for years, you may be ready to work toward sobriety. You realize that you cannot overcome your addiction by yourself. You need to check into a rehabilitation facility to get the help that you need.

However, before you check yourself in, you may wonder what type of care you will experience. You can then better prepare to complete successfully the substance abuse treatment that you need to be sober again.

Medical Treatment

A significant component of undergoing successful substance abuse treatment involves getting critical medical help. The substances that you are addicted to may mask physical symptoms that you would rather escape. You may not want to experience intense pain and discomfort from illnesses or injuries for which you use drugs or alcohol.

When you enter professional substance abuse treatment, you can get the medical help that you need to address your injuries and illnesses. The medical team assigned to your care will perform a thorough physical examination on you. They will then devise a plan to treat your physical ailments and help you experience relief without having to rely on drugs or alcohol.

Individual Therapy

Another component of your substance abuse treatment will involve undergoing individual therapy. Your care team will include a licensed therapist with whom you will meet often. You and your therapist will discuss a number of topics, including the reasons for which you use drugs or alcohol.

During individual therapy, you may also be taught coping mechanisms that will help you overcome the urge to use drugs or drink. Your therapist may teach you skills like meditation, paced breathing, and progressive relaxation. These skills can help you get past your anxieties and allow you to overcome your urge to use minute-by-minute.

Group Therapy

Finally, your substance abuse treatment will include participating in group therapy. Group therapy participation is critical for you to be able to relate to others and hear their recovery challenges and successes. You can realize that you are not alone in your battle to become sober. You can also vent and share your experiences with people who can empathize with what you are going through.
